Walk Naked in the World

There is a philosopher called Anthony DiMello and he has a reasonably simple message: to love you, first I must see you. Accuracy of perception is a prerequisite for any sort of love investment, otherwise the investment is on shifting sands that falls away when we move. As he puts it, “To love means, at least, clarity of perception, and accuracy of response. I see you, clearly as you are, and that’s the least I can demand in love.”

Ergo, when you put up a mask for friends, family and lovers – they find it harder to see you, and thus, harder to love you. You will sense this as their comments make less sense, their love gets misplaced, and other things just don’t quite land. Your friends might know you better than your parents or your twin flame. This is because, fearing judgement, you put up a mask of what you think they want to see. It’s a natural response to a judgmental family. They are also wearing masks from your judgement. Its a Mexican standoff of mutual fear.

This can also provoke a vicious cycle – the more we wear our masks, the more others invest in them – and so the less our real self get invested in, and so we wear our masks even more. Sooner or later, we begin to believe our masks are our real face and so we are confused and unhappy when we feel unloved or our feelings get misaligned. We project a pseudo ego in front of our actual ego, which is also a projection itself. How convoluted!

“If I can’t see you, I can’t love you”, said the man to the mirror

At least being open with ourselves, and taking off the mask when we look in the mirror, can help us re-calibrate who we are in a greater sense and begin to feel safe and strong enough to take it off in front of others. Just taking it off a little bit – by honoring, accepting and loving every aspect of yourself – will have positive results you will be able to see in your projected world.  Also, in spiritual terms, when we take off the mask we begin to build our reality with so much more clarity and resonance with our true selves.

Remember, you are creating just as much as you are experiencing.

However, every mask you wear becomes reflected at you in the mirror of the world. If you keep your passions hidden deeply inside, and project a banal, safe exterior then your world will inevitably become banal and safe and you risk trying to engage in your hidden passions in an unsafe, unsupportive reality that you have created.

Rather, wear your heart on your sleeve until you can take off your sleeves and simply be your heart. Walk naked in the world and the world too will strip for you, joyfully, and you can dance together! This is the ultimate irony – you never needed a mask in the first place. You were always safe!
